A mask based upon filtration alone, may not provide the wearer a protection against viruses like the H5N1, bird flu or avian virus. Unlike other surgical masks or filtration based masks, the NT-V mask protects the wearer by using nanoparticles to neutralize the virus.

Nano-particles coated on the mask acts as destructive agent on the surface. Being + / - charged, they break down microbial structures that come into contact with the mask. When exposed to light, the nanoparticles release negatively charged ions, leaving positively charged holes on the surface that release hydroxl radicals. With negatively charged cell membrane, microbes are attracted to these holes, which effectively oxidizes microbes, lysing cell membrane and causes its destruction.
